TOPIC: Casino Royale

Casino Royale 11 years 3 weeks ago #4275

With the exams over and holidays in, I caught Casino Royale with my friends on opening night. Craig has what it takes to fill the shoes of Britain's greatest spy. This is a younger, cockier and more reckless Bond, also probably the first to actually sweat, bleed profusely and mess things up. He and his partner Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) are 'unconventionally attractive' (a nice way of saying not exactly good-looking). Still, it is one of the more raw and brutal Bond movies to come in years.
Of course, the question on everyone's lips (at least on this forum), is whether the much-anticipated Aston Martin car chase is up to mark. I am sad to say, but it is an utter disappointment. The chase starts off with the DBS' engine roaring, gets your pulse racing, Bond tears down a dimly lit highway slick with rain, and then ends abruptly with the DBS' tragic demise before it barely begun. Although there is a nice bit where the DBS flies a few inches off the road, not to mention the spectacular rollover (both of which are seen in the trailer), I sort of feel cheated of a car chase which had much more potential to be a night duel.
The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 and the Ford Mondeo are sadly just there for eye candy (Although the DB5 plays a part in a very smart gag about Bond's place of residence).
Ironically, the best car chase in the movie happens in the unlikeliest of places. The airport chase I anticipated from the trailer is gritty and thrilling, it kinda looked like the Bourne Supremacy chase. Bond has to stop a petrol truck rigged to explode from reaching its target, and this involves jumping from an airplane staircase onto the moving truck, hanging precariously on its side, leaping in front and rolling out of the way of an approaching vehicle, and fist-fighting the terrorist in the cab. There are some nice stunts: sideswiping, jacknifing, backwards driving, reverse 180, slicing in half an airport vehicle or two, crashing through a roadblock and flying a few feet in the air. I'm sure it counts as a chase as Bond runs after it for the first half and some police cars pursue it for the second (there's an imaginative stunt involving one of the police cars and a landing airplane which suddenly has to ascend...). And I loved the twist in the chase's ending! :D
Also worth mentioning is the awesome opening foot chase through an urban obstacle course in the form of a construction site.
This movie is worth catching, if only to see a whole reload of the entire series. I enjoyed it, and I'm sure most of you would too.

Just to second what AndreTeh has to say about Casino Royale.

Without a doubt one of the best Bond films in years but in the car chase department, the film sadly disappoints.

As AndreTeh says, there are some very good actions sequences in the film but nothing approaching a full blown car chase. Perhaps they are saving this for the next instalment in the franchise.

Interesting points of views, and considering this could have been a contender to restore the current drought of chases this year, it is a tremendous shame. It seems as though it is up to Deja Vu to save the year.

I probably wont see this one until DVD release. Was Bond using the Sony gadgets? I saw them on this site, I saw them in my e-mail... Nice toys. Too bad about the lack of a proper chase. I guess Remy Julienne wasn't in on this one.

I have seen the film for myself now, and though I liked Casino Royale and its actors performance, it felt it was a little overlong and certainly overrated. I do like their attempt at rebooting the series, but other than that it still felt like business as usual. The car chases also sadly disappointed, particularly with the Aston Martin DBS, which you couldn't help but feel for as it was smashed up...but the rollover was simply magnificant, beating that of The Fast And The Furious Tokyo Drift for sure. The airport scene faired better, with some nicely destructive scenes but still far off from a fully fledged car chase.

I have heard that producers are working on making a sequel of this movie.
