When I think about good races in movies I like to keep Ben Hur (1959) in mind. The race is definitly the "oldest" race I have ever seen, a kind of ancestor. The parallels to nowadays oval racing are obvious.

the dirt track oval

horsepower

setting the pace and fighting for positions

crashs, collisions and wrecks

a car jump

I'm not sure if you like the idea of adding this movie to the database because there are no hoods, exaust pipes or steering wheels even though this car race is as fast and thrilling as a movie car race can be. Star Wars Episode I has good race, too.

Those movies are worth having a deeper look at the racing sequences because they are abstract. They don't deal with hub caps and asphalt but their structure works and they generate the thrill of speeding, racing and chasing very well. What do you have in mind when you think about what accounts for a good race or chase? Do you know any other titles that could be added here?

Non Automotive Racing 12 years 3 weeks ago #2822

An interesting point you make there, heavymett. As you show, the similarities between the chariot race in Ben Hur and oval track auto-racing sequences are many.

While I would not endorse chariot races and other non-automotive racing and chasing sequences being added to the database, for reasons I have explained in another thread, it's still a really interesting topic worthwhile exploring in the forum.

horse-racing:
Looking at just racing sequences, the only other racing films that are made to the same extent as auto-racing films are horse-racing films. I suspect that not many in the forum would be into them, and I can't say that I am terribly crazy about them either. However, I do remember that the final race in The Black Stallion (1979) was outstanding. And, of course, the chariot race in Ben Hur is a horse race of sorts and holds its own with just about any racing sequence I can think of.

boat-racing:
Although boat chases have been discussed in this thread: [url:2jvi4b1g]www.varaces.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=546[/url] not too much has been said about boat racing in films, probably because there are truly specialist fare. While I have never seen Racing Fever (1964), the word is that the boat racing sequences in it are spectacular:

aircraft-racing:
Aerial dogfights in films I find somewhat disappointing because, surprisingly, you do not get the same sense of speed as in something more automotive in nature. The only film that I know of that comes close to including aerial oval track racing is The Tarnished Angels (1958). Apart from the racing sequences, though, the film is more of a Fassbinder like melodrama.

Being a Star Wars fan (I'm sure you have all noticed that fact somehow) one could say I have a biased view on the Pod Racing sequence from Episode 1, but on its own it stands as an impressive sequence, Star Wars or not. A lot of people only like the movie itself just for that one scene, and seeing them get destroyed in such high detail was a bonus for me :D

Yes Ben Hur for the past and StarWars1 pod-races for a distant future
The spaceships would even look cooler with STP and Pennzoil Stickers on them..In my opinion those two movies have all the right ingredients that a cool carracing-sequence should have as well..
And when you cross boatracing with carracing, you get the Swamp Buggy's racing at the 'Mile of Mud' in Naples Florida.
