2010 Car Chase/Racing Films 7 years 11 months ago #9173

If 2009 was not a particularly strong year for car chase/racing films, 2010 seems that it will be much more promising. Here's what we can look forward to.

Bitch Slap (2009): Technically a 2009 release, it has only recently finished working through the festival circuit and will open in early January. Obviously inspired from Tarantino's retro exploitation fare, with a bit of Russ Meyer thrown in as well. Some automotive content appears in the film, and with Zoe Bell, of Death Proof fame, as stunt co-ordinator, hopefully their will be some car chase sequences on display. You can catch a glimpses of the scenes in question in its trailer.
Release date: 8th January.

Book of Eli (2010): The Hughes brothers return with this post-apocalyptic tale starring Denzel Washington. Its trailer features a few shots of vehicular mayhem.
Release date: 15th January.

Edge of Darkness (2010): Always good to see Mel Gibson in a revenge flick, a genre he seems to specialize in since Mad Max. Automotive action-wise, minimally there seems to be a chase sequence in a tunnel.
Release date: 29th January.
Trailer.

From Paris With Love (2010): John Travolta plays FBI agent Charlie Wax in a thriller that looks like a cross between Swordfish and Ronin. There is a chase down a freeway featuring Travolta with a with a bazooka. Who can ask for more?
Release date: 19th February.
Trailer.

Cop Out (2010): Kevin Smith directs this police comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. Some evident car chase action is on show in its trailer.
Release date: 26th February.

The Bounty Hunter (2010): Another action comedy this time starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler as a bounty hunter after her who also happens to be her ex-husband. They boot around together in an Oldsmobile Cutlass and are pursued by bad guys in a SUV.
Release date: 19th March.
Trailer.

The A-Team (2010): Feature film based on the 1980s television series. No poster artwork or trailers yet, but the word is a chase takes place on an air force base.
Release date: 11th June.

Knight & Day (2010):
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up with Cruise playing some deranged agent. Trailer features a freeway chase that bears similarities to the one in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Release date: 2nd July.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010): Fantasia meets Harry Potter. Nicolas Cage is the sorcerer in question and he applies his wizardry during a chase sequence.
Release date: 16th July.
Trailer.

Inception (2010): Christopher Nolan's much anticipated next film after the success with The Dark Knight. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this sci-fi thriller with a couple of shots of vehicles in apparent pursuit appearing in the trailer. With Nolan at the helm, always worth a look.
Release date: 16th July.

Salt (2010): Ever since Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Wanted, Angelina Jolie's star persona is increasingly associated with being a paid assassin and Salt solidifies this connection. A multi-vehicle city chase down city streets is in store for car chase fans.
Release date: 23rd July.

Any other 2010 car chase/racing films that I have missed?

A-Team (2010) 7 years 11 months ago #9188

Trailer for the A-Team finally out. A lot of automotive action featuring in it. I would be quite surprised if none of these shots do not prove to be derived from a car chase sequence in the end.

Great write-up, CCK. Hopefully there will be more automotive pursuits this year than 09's.

Two heist movies have potential car chases.

The first and more promising one is an independent: CA$H, starring Sean Bean. Some shots of pursuing cop cars and Sean tossing cash out the window.

Trailer

The second is the more over-the-top spring tentpole called Takers. It seems to inspired by Heat, with more rap music and free-running.

This summer's 'The Expendables' looks like it has a couple of nice chases. If you're a fan of 80s action flicks, this is the ticket! Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham AND Mickey Rourke... it's like a dream team. And the trailer takes 'action-packed' to a whole new level. :)

2010's shaping up to be a strong year for car chases. Here's a rundown (pun unintended) on more vehicular mayhem set to hit your screens...

Iron Man 2
This summer's tentpole release not only promises blockbuster fights and aerial flights, but a neat race in Monaco, with Whiplash interrupting the proceedings in his own spectacular way.

Trailer

The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Nic Cage seems to be in every movie nowadays, and next to that kid from what this author thinks is the best Dreamworks animated film yet, this looks like another summer attraction to watch. The brand-new Trailer 2 has just been released with more footage of Nic's sweet ride, and although it's so far looking like a 'race-against-time' sequence (much like Percy Jackson's disappointing joyride), it still boasts some impressive-looking CGI.

Trailer 2

Tron Legacy
Another Disney movie, this one is a year-end release, but fans of the original's light-cycle race will have something to look forward to in the sequel. And it's all in glorious IMAX 3-D...

Trailer

Killers
Ashton Kutcher as a secret agent? Who woulda thought? Posing as a competitor to Knight & Day is this amusing romantic-comedy-action-espionage flick. Boasts a pretty good stable too; California, Firebird, F-150, and one unfortunate Mustang...

Trailer

The Other Guys
I'm a huge sucker for buddy-cop flicks, and right on the heels of Cop-Out is another spoof on this popular genre. The Rock and Sam get to play Starsky & Hutch, while Ferrell and Wahlberg escape a helicopter in what has to be the lamest police vehicle (Hint: It rhymes with Amadeus). Personally, I'm looking forward to this film the most. :)

Trailer

The Good, The Bad, and the Weird
It's been out in Korea two years ago, but this parody of a Spaghetti Western is finally getting a release on American shores. Some nice motorcyle chases in between the usual high noon showdowns and great train robberies.

Trailer

Kites
Last, but not definitely not least, is an unexpected entry from Bollywood. Bringing to mind the Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts pick, 'The Mexican', is this interracial romantic film. But the setpiece to look out for is a Bad Boys 2-inspired car transporter chase in the desert, with the protagonist throwing, you guessed it, cars at the pursuing law enforcement authorities. Definitely a frontrunner for Most Destructive this year.

Trailer

I can't wait! :)
