TOPIC: Blaxploitation Car Chase Films

Blaxploitation Car Chase Films 9 years 5 months ago #5952

Browsing through the database just noticed the high percentage of blaxploitation films with car chases in them, with naturally most of them made in the 1970s, during the heyday of the cycle. These include:

Cool Breeze (1972)
Shaft’s Big Score (1972)
Cleopatra Jones (1973)
Hit! (1973)
Black Belt Jones (1974)
Truck Turner (1974)
Willie Dynamite (1974)
Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (1975)
Shaft (2000)

In addition to these, there appears to be loads of blaxploitation films with car chases that have yet to be added to the database. Here are a few that according to some online reviews have car chases in them:

Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970)
Black Gunn (1972)
Come Back, Charleston Blue (1972)
Gordon's War (1973)
Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off (1973)
That Man Bolt (1973)
Black Eye (1974)
The Black Godfather (1974)
Black Lolita (1975)
Cooley High (1975)
Friday Foster (1975)
Black Heat (1976)
The Human Tornado (1976)
No Way Back (1976)
Black Samurai (1977)

Any that I have missed?

I own Cotton Comes To Harlem. It has 2 minute chase scene with a golden armored truck  I just can't believe I haven't submitted it to the site yet. Friday Foster also has a short car chase with a hearse. Other blaxploitation on IMDB are:

They Call Me MISTER Tibbs! (1970)
Death Journey (1976)
Mister Deathman (1977)

Aside from the Sidney Poitier classic, the other two appear to lost fro good.

Thanks for those additional titles, Prowler.

re Cotton Comes To Harlem: a two minute chase is kinda long for a 1970 film. I especially want to see it if it features a golden armored truck!

Don't forget the Bond film LIVE AND LET DIE from 1973 lots of black baddies chase Bond thru out the film,Especially in the beginning in New York city, the double decker bus chase in the carribean and the airport chase scene in New Orleans....Joey Chitwood's stunt team did some stuff in this one. Also one of the best speedboat chases ever filmed also....this was the super Bond film of the 70's.......8 out of 10 stars here

Good point Jameshot, and welcome to the forum! Live and Let Die should be considered a cross between blaxploitation and a Bond film.

good news, PROWLER, DEATH JOURNEY[76] is alive and well. i have it on a 4 movie dvd, i bought back in the fall. it is called NON STOP URBAN ACTION. it is by TGG DIRECT [2008] and is well worth buying. i got mine at ODD LOTS, a overstock store, for 3 dollars. this dvd has THE BLACK GESTAPO (75) , THE BLACK SIX (74) , DEATH JOURNEY (76) , and GET CHIRSTIE LOVE (74). THE BLACK SIX is a black biker movie, but here's the kicker, it stars six pro football players from the 70's like MERCURY MORRIS, MEAN JOE GREEN, WILL LANIER, and GENE WASHINGTON. its a black heroes against nasty white motorcycle gang movie. it has a lot of subtle stereotype jokes through the movie which was quite original and intelligent for the time. GET CHIRSTIE LOVE is a added bonus on any movie collection and it's not even a car movie. she is a doll. i didn't care that much for THE BLACK GESTAPO, it the old power struggle story, within and outside the gangs. DEATH JOURNEY(76) has the most chases in it. its not the best movie ever but will keep you interested until the chases arrive. it is database worthy, i was going to submit it myself sooner or later. a lot of these older, lesser known movies are out there, you just have to hunt them. i find them more by accident than anything. if you find it, buy it.
