The Driver getting UK Blu-Ray release

The driver uk blurayLast year, Walter Hill’s car chase classic The Driver made its long-awaited Blu-Ray debut, with a spruced-up transfer that put the dated DVD release to shame.

Unfortunately, very few were able to appreciate it: not only was it a US-only release, but it was limited to just 3000 copies and sold exclusively by Twilight Time. The fact there are still copies available to order suggests it completely slipped under the radar, sadly.

One year later, The Driver is finally getting the wider Blu-Ray release it deserves, as UK distributor Studio Canal will be releasing it in the high-def format on July 14th.

Like the original release, the UK blu-ray of The Driver is somewhat skimpy on extras: you get a trailer, a teaser, a forgettable 3 minute alternative opening and…that’s it. Granted, the US release didn’t contain much else, but you did at least get a supplementary booklet containing additional art and background information on the film which was a nice touch.

I also can’t help but be disappointed with the generic artwork– compare it to the striking theatrical poster art used for the US Twilight Time packaging, which is far more befitting and faithful to the film:

Still, it’s been a very long wait, but now UK car chase collectors can finally add The Driver to their cherished blu-ray collection if you don’t fancy shelling out extra to import the limited Twilight Time release.

If you’re one of many who have seen Nicholas Winding’s Drive but have yet to see The Driver, you owe it to yourself to watch it. It’s no secret that The Driver was a primary influence for Winding: both films share similarly muted characters, fantastic film-noir cinematography, and, of course, visceral car chase sequences.
