these were a great over all car, movies and real life. pontiacs were a lumpy, curvy, muscular car anyway. they had a lot of torque for take off but had good top end also. this usually went fast between the two. unless you were crusin' down the road, mid range didn't last long.i rode around in my cousin;s candy apple red '67 GTO, which was a great car. 400ci, 4 speed, 4.10 rear end gears: 4 MILES TO A GALLON OF GAS. it was sweet. it took two of us to keep gas in it. an older friend bought a '69 GTO brand new. olive green, inside and out, 400ci, 4 speed. soon afterwards, he started with tires and rims. later came headers and more engine mods. it was the fastest car in my county at the time. i tried to buy it later with no luck. TWO LANE BLACKTOP, WARREN OATES' GTO was the new hot rod chasing off the old one. XXX, VIN DIESEL'S GTO tricked out with more stuff than a tank. XXX 2 STATE OF THE UNION's tricked out custom GTO was cool. a GTO commands attention and authority with it's prowess and bulging body panels. other models took it's ranking but never took it place. the SUPER DUTY 455ci motor had a lot more potential when smog emissions took away a lot of it's horsepower. GTO is considered the first muscle car, it wasn't. it was the first purpose built muscle car. there were a lot of older cars built for speed, pontiac just got the credit. hot tip: the LEMANS is the same car at half the price and you can do whatever you want to do to it. the front ends and tail lights are slightly different on some models.
