Speed Racer (2008)
May 06, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Speed Racer PosterThe Wachowski Brothers, who produced arguably the best CGI car chase in Matrix Reloaded, return to the automotive terrain in their feature film adaptation of Speed Racer based upon the Japanese TV anime series. Some critics have compared the film's stunning visuals with the green screen work in Sin City and the 300. Like the martial art sequences in the Matrix trilogy, viewers can expect set pieces that also stress the impossible with automobiles performing incredible stunts. Although rated PG, the film is really family fare with its overt cartoon aesthetic.

Speed Racer opens in both the USA and the UK 9th May 2008.

Wanted (2008)
Apr 16, 2008 at 11:56 AM
poster

Due out to hit the cinemas in late June 2008 is Wanted, based upon the comic book novel of the same name. Story follows humdrum life of disaffected slacker Wes Gibson, played by James McAvoy, whose life is transformed when he meets Fox, assassin extraordinaire, played by Angela Jolie. Of more interest to car chase fans though is the film's main pursuit sequence, which features Jolie driving a Dodge Viper and villain in a delivery van down city streets. Since the car chase features heavily in the film's most recent trailer, there may be reason to believe that sequence is one of the film's showcase moments. However, initial word is that it will be a major CGI affair so may not appeal to car chase purists.

More details are available at the film's website.

Vantage Point (2008)
Feb 22, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Vantage Point PosterVantage Point is being released 22nd February in the US. The film centers upon a terrorist attack and the story is told from multiple character perspectives. Critics are split whether the story telling device works well or is a gimmick. More important from Varaces' perspective, though, is the major car chase set piece appearing in the film. Set in Salamanca in Spain, the pursuit appears to be a return to European style car chases. We will have to see if its car chase in any way approaches the achievements of those appearing in Ronin.

A teaser of the car chase is available at moveweb.com. Trailers and other material are availavble at the film's website.

Death Race

Death Race

Death Race, a remake of Paul Bartel's cult 1970s exploitation film Death Race 2000, is set to hit US screens on 26th September 2008. Jason Statham stars in the David Carradine role but the film is not entirely faithful to the original story. With a nod to the Mad Max series, the film is set in a post-industrial wasteland where a penitentiary has its inmates compete in a deadly road race broadcast to a global television audience. The remake may be a hard sell to fans of the original, but may be won over if the racing scenes are well staged. Paul W.S. Anderson directs.
